Tilt Renewables is proud to announce the commencement of the delivery phase of its Latrobe Valley BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) – the Company’s first battery storage project and its third major investment in renewable energy in Victoria.
Construction will commence in the fourth quarter of 2023 to build what will be a 100MW / 200MWh Battery Energy Storage System located south of Morwell, supporting the supply of clean, reliable energy into the national grid.
Reflecting on the investment, Tilt Renewables Interim Chief Executive Officer Steve Symons said:
“This is an exciting opportunity for Tilt Renewables and a valuable step in enabling the LatrobeValley community to build out the renewable energy projects needed for our future.”
Recognising the importance of this investment, the Hon Lily D’Ambrosio MP, Minister for Energy and Climate Action, noted:
“The Latrobe Valley BESS will be critical to strengthening our renewable energy grid and ensuing we make the most of our renewable generation when it is abundant and cheap. Victoria is home to big batteries and our ambitious energy storage targets are ensuring we continue to attract investment to our state.”
Batteries allow for energy to be stored and dispatched when needed and this project marks important progress towards the Victorian government’s goal to build 2.6 gigawatts of energy storage capacity by 2030 to provide reliable clean energy for the grid. The Latrobe Valley BESS will modernise the State’s electricity grid and boost the reliability of power supply.
Mr Symons explained:
“The Latrobe Valley BESS will store power when there is a lot of energy available, for example during the middle of the day when there is excess solar entering the grid. The BESS can release this stored energy during periods of high demand to maintain a reliable energy supply for the network. It is projects like these, in tandem with other renewable investments, that will help all Victorians continue to enjoy reliable power during the energy transition.”
Tilt Renewables has selected Fluence and AusNet as delivery partners for the Latrobe Valley BESS. Fluence brings a proven track record with more than 7 GW of energy storage contracted and deployed globally. AusNet brings decades of experience in building out and managing Victoria’s transmission network, with several BESS projects also underway.
Mr Symons reflected on the significance of this investment, noting:
“Latrobe Valley BESS underpins Tilt Renewables’ place as a leading renewable energy company in Australia. This project will add to our existing portfolio of 10 generators and brings us closer to our goal to deliver another 5,000 megawatts of generation into the National Electricity Market by 2030. We believe that it is going to take a mix of generation and storage projects to rapidly drive the transition to renewables. Our investment in this project shows our commitment to help deliver that transition for Victoria and Australia and we look forward to working with Fluence, AusNet and AEMO through construction and commissioning.”
